VALIDOS - Open Source Compliance for Businesses

Joint Database on Open Source Compliance for Companies

Print E-mail

Validos is a collaboration of companies and other entities in the technology field for open source compliance in business use. Validos focuses currently on package level legal validation of open source software packages and provides reports on validation and instructions for redistribution. Previously compliance work has been done separately in each company, i.e. many times, but now Validos enables the companies to do this only once and to share the results of validation within the collaboration.

For this purpose, a number of companies have established Validos ry, a Finnish registered association that manages the collaborative work and holds and shares the resulting database. The association has eleven members (since first of November 2009): the combined turnover of members is over one billion euro.

Since the effectiveness of the collaborative approach increases with the increase of the number of members, membership in Validos is open to new enterprises and other entities. If you are interested, please contact us.

The editorial committee of IFOSSLR has published their second issue.

One of the articles touches very closely open source compliance: Richard Kemp wrote Towards Free/Libre Open Source Software (“FLOSS”) Governance in the Organisation. I can recommend this article to everyone considering how to implement open source governance at their organisation: it explains different views to governance and how these can be used as building blocks for a corporate open source governance strategy. The article gives concrete examples of these documents.

The whole issue is available at: http://www.ifosslr.org/ifosslr/issue/view/2.

The background of Validos - "Let there be co-operation"

Working as an outside counsel, it has happened to me more than once that our firm has been asked to legally validate an open source /FOSS package that somebody else already asked us to validate.

The validation work, comprising of reviewing of a software packages technical and legal qualities, is conventionally done in each company separately, i.e. many times. The basic part of the work is very similar in every user (redistributor) entity.
